Un-man your Language, Those Word Cops are Coming for You

You like word games? Kathleen and I do - crosswords, Scrabble, Boggle and so on. But I at least, don’t think the games our legislators are playing with words are very fun-ny.

Komo News reports that “An internal memo at Seattle City Hall is causing quite a stir. It suggests government workers no longer use the terms ‘citizen’ or ‘brown bag,’” because citizen might be offensive to residents who are not citizens of the U.S. and because brown bag apparently once was a way to refer to people of color.”

Are you kidding me?

The State of Washington already has spent beaucoup bucks and countless wasted hours on trying to expunge offensive words out of official documents. Any word that has “man” or “men” in it is bad. As KOMO reports, the word freshman now is “first-year,” journeyman now is “journey-level” and penmanship now is “handwriting.” Sam and I can’t help wondering how crossword publishers are handling all this change. I don’t want to be an old curmudgeon and not adjust to change, but it strikes me that all this “political/social correctness,” is mostly political/social stupidity.

How do you spell G-O-I-N-G-T-O-O -F-A-R? Good thing Sam is an “it.”

I don’t see why we can’t break the glass ceiling and give women equal pay and equal rights without totally screwing up our national language. First of all, how you going to explain to some poor foreigner attempting to learn our American English why the words he/she/it has been learning are now all wrong? Why couldn’t we just replace the “a” in words like journeyman or penmanship with on “o” or a “u.” That wouldn’t involve such big change and would only make us sound like we were talking Jamaican or something. Besides, people who spell phonetically often use the “o” or “u” in place of the “a” anyway.

KOMO also reports that a poll they conducted found that many people did not find certain words offensive. Of course not, because they aren’t.

What are we going to do now instead of saying, “Man it’s hot today,” or “Man, I sure could use a cold beer. And I suppose now we can’t think of or refer to our pickup trucks as hims and so on? We already refer to ships as “she” but I’ll be danged if I’m going to call my man truck a she truck. Hey! And what about our man caves guys? Football season is almost upon us. Honey, would you bring a plate of nachos to my it cave or my person cave?

Let’s fight back! Instead of referring to menopause as personpause or something dumb like that, let’s just keep calling it menopause. Three bags of poop on this whole word-changing business. Sam and me think it’s much ado about nothing.
